Volunteers Use Assists from the Scientology Handbook to Help During Southern California Fires
The Scientology Handbook was the basis of much of the assistance provided by Volunteer Ministers last week, when Scientology Disaster Relief Teams helped in one of Southern California's worst fire seasons.
Conditions on the fire lines were arduous, and the speed with which the fires spread left residents, fire and rescue personnel reeling. The Volunteer Ministers provided Scientology assists to the firemen. Assists are procedures that address the spiritual component in trauma and stress. The firefighters were under intense pressure and when they visited the Volunteer Ministers tents at the end of their shifts, assists helped them relax and sleep so they could prepare themselves for the next arduous day on the fire lines.
The Volunteer Ministers also gave assists to those who were evacuated to shelters. One volunteer commented that many of those he met were shocked that the fire reached their neighborhoods. By the time they realized that they needed to leave, the fire was upon them. Assists helped them calm down and regain a feeling of optimism.
Volunteer Ministers established, opened and manned a shelter at Mira Costa College in Oceanside for local residents who had to evacuate their homes. They served around the clock to ensure that help was available whenever needed.
"L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Scientology religion, once wrote,'A being is only as valuable as he can serve others'," said Veronica Albano, international spokesperson for the Scientology Volunteer Ministers. "The fire fighters and the many volunteers who helped the people of Southern California over the past week, when it really counted, have shown how valuable they are."
